In 1960s Turtle Watching at Rantau Abang, Terengganu become world famous after several international magazine wrote about the abundance of sea turtle found landing at the beach here to lay their egg. It became a sensation later as more and more people coming to the place ans was soon become was well-known tourist attraction around the world. Two decade later in the 80's the number of turtles landed there were decreasing rapidly because of man made activities through shipping and fishing activities around the world and a few year later tourist complete stop coming to the area anymore.
There are still several place for visiter to find sea turtle landing activities in Terengganu.
Icluding a beach where Kemaman Tourist Guide operate a turtle watching activities in the area and visiting the local Sea Turtle Hatchery at Kemaman.

Fact :
Turtles are reptiles of the order Testudines (the crown group of the superorder Chelonia), characterised by a special bony or cartilaginous shell developed from their ribs that acts as a shield.”Turtle” may either refer to the Testudines as a whole, or to particular Testudines which make up aform taxon that is not monophyletic.
The order Testudines includes both extant (living) and extinct species. The earliest known turtles date from 215 million years ago, making turtles one of the oldest reptile groups and a more ancient group than lizards, snakes and crocodiles. Of the many species alive today, some are highlyendangered.
Like other reptiles, turtles are ectotherms—their internal temperature varies according to the ambient environment, commonly called cold-blooded. However, leatherback sea turtles have noticeably higher body temperature than surrounding water because of their high metabolic rate.
Like other amniotes (reptiles, dinosaurs, birds, and mammals), they breathe air and do not lay eggs underwater, although many species live in or around water. The largest turtles are aquatic.(Taken from Wikipedia)
Facilities:

~Baby Turtle “flying” on my hand… ~
A shed will be provided to tourist while waiting for the turtle.
Tourist will just need to make early booking and what we will do is we will call the tourist at night once the turtles landing. Turtle nesting process requires about 3 hours after landing on the beach. Only qualified nature guides are allowed to enter the turtle nesting area in order to control the number of tourists who come every night, to make it not too crowded. Too many tourists will attract the turtles attention of our presence and will stop looking for spawning areas and will lead them back to the sea.
Tourists are advised to check-in hotels around Cherating or Kemaman area if interested to watch the turtles because tourists do not need to wait for the turtles at the beach. Turtle egg collectors or “Rangers” that recognized and authorised by the department of fisheries (Jabatan Perikanan) are allowed and they will tell the nature guides if there is a turtle landing and nature guide will call the tourist to come to the beach to see the turtle. This procedure is to avoid too many visitors to come to the beach at one time and will disturb the turtle and its habitat.
Activities :
Tourist can see the turtle only after the turtle laying eggs process finished which means after the turtle dig a hole and began laying eggs. And this process will take about half an hour. Turtle will cover the hole after the turtle nesting process and getting ready to return to the sea. We will accompany the turtles to the edge of the water and waved goodbye to the turtle. However, visitors are prohibited to stand in front of the turtle while it crawls to the sea.
You will be lucky if there are eggs that hatched on the day as you can release hatchlings into the sea from a distance of 10 meters from the edge of the water. This is because the hatchlings require adequate strength before it entered the water. Hatchlings have the energy for 7 days for them to seek refuge in the sea. But in fact, only one baby turtle will survive in 1000 hatchlings that hatch because it has too many enemies such as birds, big fish, fishing net and etc.
If the nature guide did not call tourists to come to the beach before 12 midnight, this means that no turtles have landed on that night.

Tour guide will call you if there any signs of turtle’s landing and will inform the check-point to meet. This is because we do not know where the turtles lay their eggs at that night you make booking.
After that, your tour guide will take you to the location where the turtles lay their eggs, but tourists are not allowed to go near to the turtle before getting the signal from the tour guide.

Kampung Serada got its name from a tree. The Serada tree is very rare. According to the story, in the midst of clearing the new land, the people were attracted to a tall tree that has no branches and had never been seen by any of them. They then agreed to name the place after the tree to commemorate the finding of the rare tree.
Kampung Serada is located in the district of Kuala Terengganu and is about 20 kilometres from the town of Kuala Terengganu. To get there, one could use the road from Kuala Terengganu to Kuala Berang and there are also signages along the road to guide visitors to the entrance to Kampung Serada.
Mukim Serada has a population of 2000. Most of them are scattered throughout the village and live quite near to farming areas and fruit orchards that are the villagers’ main source of income. Majority of the residents are Malay muslims who had been living in Kampung Serada for generations.
Kampong Serada is located near to a stream that also functions as water treatment reservoir. A long time ago, the stream was the villagers bloodline and they depended on for their link to outside world and as their source of income. Due to this most of the houses were built along the stream. However due to the frequent flooding, most of the villagers had moved away from the riverbank. Now the riverbanks had become almost non existent due to the sand mining activities. ![]() |
Fish rearing activities can now be found through the long strech the River at Kg Tiruk and Whole Mukim Serada |
As part of the effort in upgrading the vilalge economy, a project in clearwater fish farming in cages is being run in the village river. The project sponsored by the deaprtment of Fishery is run by two villagers, Jusoh Hamzah and Ismail Ali. Both of them started this venture since 2007. They received financial aid and guidance from the department which enabled them to build two cages that could breed 3,000 fish at any one time.
There is not much problems faced in the farming of clearwater fish and the visits from the Department of Fishery help to ensure the quality of the fish.

Banana Plantation in Kg Serada |
Most of the villagers work as labourers, farmers or are self employed either opening up their own business or breed livestock. Due to this they lead a humble life and many of them live in wooden houses which are surrounded with fruit trees and greeneries which contribute to the slow pace way of life. Such environment would have a calming effect to those who visit the village.
Why Kampung Serada play an Important Landmark in Malaysia? and the Reason Behind it.
Kampung Serada is a settlement that had been in existence for a long time. This was proven by the old tomb of a learned religious man, Syeikh Abdul Malik Abdullah (famously known as Tok Pulau Manis) who was one of the founders of the village. He was born in 1650 and died in 1730. it is believed that he came from Baghdad, Iraq.![]() |
Surau Tok Guru Cik Embung, Keturunan Tokku Pulau Manis |
Tok Pulau Manis also play and important role in the development of Quranic Exegesis in Malay Archipelago.
It is argued that the study of tafsir (Quranic Exegesis) and its writing may not be clearly found as early as the arrival of Islam in the Malay ArchipelagoNevertheless, as a core subject of the Islamic teaching Quran might have been indirectly introduced since the advance of Islam in the region.
Moreover, it was the task of Muslim mubaligh to deliver the message of the holy book soon after they managed to convert the Malays into Islam. Hence, they had gradually introduced the Quran in the sense of Quranic exegesis that in the mean time would have also acellerated its writing in the Malay perspectives.
The process of Islamisation and Muslim propagation began in the city of Makah al Mukarramah where the Arabs were the first to accept the propagation of Islam. The Arabs spreaded Islam to the world inclusive of the Malay archepelago. The relationship between the Arabs and the Malay archepelago became an important factor as the foundation of the expansion of Islam in that region.
The Malay archepelago comprises of Indonesia, the Philipines, Brunei, Patani and Malaysia. These
countries are situated in between the Hindi ocean and South China Sea. It is considered a narrow gateway that has to be cruised through by ships going to and from both seas. There are several theories with regard to the arrival of Islam in the Malay archepelago. Some say that it advent straight from the Arab land while others believe that it was brought in by the Indian missionaries as well as China.
The Arab history showed that the Arab traders who arrived in the Malay archepelago sailed through various routes beginning from the Jeddah beach across the Red Sea to Aden, the south of the Arab peninsular than reaching to Gujerat (India). The journey finally continued to the Malay archepelago. Others have the opinion that the odyssey began from land which included Syria, or Iraq to Khurasan, the north of Persia to Afghanistan before arriving in China and continued the journey form there to the Malay archepelago.(Mahyuddin Haji Yahya.2001; 6)
The expansion of Islam in the Malay archepelago went through two phases. The first phase witnessed the arrival and expansion. There existed several views on the exact arrival date of Islam to the said region. Some believed that Islam was brought in in the 9th AD while a remaining few considered that it arrived as early as the 8th AD. Mahyuddin Haji Yahya. 2001; 3).
The writing of the exegesis int the Malay archepalago began in the 17th century with the emergence of the first book of tafsirin the Malay language published by a Syeikh Abdul Rauf Fanshuri who wrote a book entitlled “Turjuman al-Mustafid”. The book was later recopied by a Tuan Sheikh 'Abdul Malik bin Abdullah or better known as Tok Pulau Manis in the 1730s.
As a continuation to Syeikh Abdul Rauf writings in Indonesia, a book of tafsirnamed “Nur al-Ihsan” written by a Haji Muhammad Sa’id bin Omar was published for the first time in 1936 in Tanah Melayu (Malaysia).
Makam Tok Pulau Manis |
Tok Pulau Manis was an advisor to the ruler of Terengganu, Sultan Zainal Abidin. When retired, he migrated to Serada. He founded a madrasah (religious centre) that follow the system of Masjidil Haram in Makkah. Now his tomb is often visited by people all over the country to acknowledge his contributions and to offer prayers for him.

Draft-----A Village Kampung located at Jalan Pasir Tinggi-Serada off Jalan Kuala Berang known as
Kampung Tiruk along the Terengganu river is a village inhabited by the Chinese since a very long time ago. What is very unique is that people that pass along the road will not notice that the residents that are living in the Village are Chinese! These is because they live a Malay
style houses which does not show any kind of Chinese design. The only things that may make people wonder about the village is that
there is dogs and red box of little houses that house deity and god.
The Chinese community here are very special and are call "Cina Tiruk" . Being 'very familiar' of the Malays and its culture due to been living there for hundreds of year. The Chinese here are largely of Hokkienese heritage have adapt Chinese and Malay culture and lifestyle together into a form of a new and uniques "Tiruk peranakan culture". Here we can see the man here wear the Kain Pelikat and Sarong . While the woman wearing batik and baju kebaya.
They can talk very fluent in Terengganu's Village
dialects! Unlike other Hokkien in China or other part of Malaysia. If they talk in Hokkien many of they sentences are mixed together with Malay
words and dialect. What are unique is they practise a lifestyle
similar to the Malays', with some of them able to read and write the
Jawi script.
The Community here prefer eating with they hand. Among favorite are ikan bakar, ulam, and BUDU , Nasi Kerabu and Nasi Dagang
Kampung Tiruk's settlement are believe to be among the first place the Chinese had set foot on before they moved to Malacca and other states on the west coast of the peninsula .
At one time there was alot of Chinese people living here at the Village. As modernization set foot many of them are have migrated to towns and living only.
Chinese New Year here are very fun as there will be lantern hanging from the house veranda of each Cina Tiruk. Chinese New Year will not be complete without their home-made kuih bahulu.
It has become a tradition for them and their family to get together at least two days before the Chinese New Year to bake the sweet fluffy cake made of eggs, sugar and flour at the family house in Kampung Tiruk, Serada.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi launched the park on Feb 3. Engineers for the projects comprised not only locals but also Australians and Europeans. State Infrastructure, Public Amenities and Communications Committee chairman Datuk Wan Hisham Wan Salleh said the park was an attraction featured for Visit Terengganu Year this year.
The 23ha park costing RM250mil is also a project under the East Coast Economic Region (ECER).

( From my point of view: I think they use the costal erosion as an excuse to get Grant from the federal government :P )
Varieties food stalls can be found at Batu Buruk, streeching from Batu Buruk Resort until 500 meter from the Kuala Terengganu General Hospital.
